About Jules
Jules has had a passion for wood turning since the 1980s.
I was born in Knutsford in 1955 and, after spells in Surrey and the British Virgin Islands as a youngster, I was educated at Holyhead Secondary School and North Staffs Polytechnic where I studied Social Geography.
Whilst working as a barman on the Irish Sea ferries I gained my private Pilots License. Although I had intended to make a career in aviation I somehow ended up in Australia working on trawlers and eventually as a boatyard foreman on Sydney Harbour.

It was during this exciting time that I fell in love with some simple bowls by the well known Wood turner Richard Raffan in a Sydney gallery and I knew I had to have a go. Richard was a great help and encouragement to a ‘rookie’ turner and I take this opportunity to thank him for that.
In 1983 I enrolled on a trades course in Sydney technical college. I turned professional six months later in 1984 with my first commissions; a series of boxes for the Prime Minister’s office and 300 needle cases for the Australian National trust Catalogue.
Returning to the U.K. in 1987, I started my workshop back in Anglesey where my family are based and where I still live today.
I have been lucky enough to have my work in many group and solo exhibitions and in outlets throughout the U.K. and overseas. These include The Conran Shop in London and the Guggenheim in New York.

I enjoy working with reclaimed timber much of which I acquired during restoration projects of Historic structures such as Canterbury Cathedral roof, The Cutty Sark, Bangor Pier and others. From these and other local windfall timbers such as Yew and Cherry , I produce a wide selection of items such as Pens, Coffee scoops, Lamps and Bowls. I also welcome commissions..
